On our drive out to Forest Lake, it appears that this course is in the middle of nowhere, but with State Road 429 now open, Forest Lake in reality is just off the beaten path from the major parts of Central Florida ( Ocoee, FL – a 15 to 20 minute drive from the Disney / Kissimmee area). Upon pulling into the golf club, you can see the driving range and the first tee and you notice that there are no homes in site.
This was the first non-resort course that we had played so the initial setting and atmosphere was not up to par with the caliber of courses we had previously played during our summer tour. However, every Forest Lake employee that we encountered from the moment we walked into the pro shop greeted us with a smile and they were very willing to assist us, much like you would expect at a resort course.
It was a real treat from our previous experiences at other courses to step up to the first tee box and see no houses or condos anywhere nearby. Some of the holes play right up against a major highway, but it was not a distraction to any member of our group. For the few holes that played up near the highway, it seemed more like a peaceful background noise blending in with the surroundings.
Most of the holes were a straight shot to the green with wide open fairways. Forest Lake is definitely a great course for a first day of play to loosen up, get your stroke back, and still score well. The layout of the course provides plenty of birdie opportunities on numerous holes.
This course was in great condition especially for the summer months, and the greens were fast and true. For the price that you pay, you will not find a better round of golf in the Orlando area. We strongly recommend this course. It is a unique golfing experience when compared to other courses in the area. There is elevation on some of the holes, and it had the feeling of a New England Country Club course. Overall it was a great golfing experience with friendly staff, beautiful scenery, and great course conditions.
